23 Seats on the Plane – Who Goes to Brazil?

June 1, 2013

Yesterday, the U.S.’ provisional roster for the Gold Cup was released.

Considering the fact that the Gold Cup is really the last opportunity for Jurgen Klinsmann to take a long look at players on the outside of the United States men’s national team looking in, I thought it would be helpful to create a list of the current U.S. depth chart (in my opinion) to see who Klinsmann ought to be looking at for the Gold Cup.

Here is my list of the 23 guys (in italics) who should make the World Cup squad as of right now.

Goalkeepers (3)
Tim Howard, Brad Guzan, Nick Rimando, Sean Johnson, Bill Hamid, Tally Hall, Steve Clark

Center-backs (4)
Omar Gonzalez, Matt Besler, Geoff Cameron, Carlos Bocanegra, John Anthony Brooks, Oguchi Onyewu, George John

Right-backs (2)
Steve Cherundolo, Timmy Chandler, Geoff Cameron (counted as a center-back), Michael Parkhurst, Eric Lichaj, Michael Orozco, A.J. DeLaGarza

Left-backs (3)
Fabian Johnson, Edgar Castillo, DaMarcus Beasley, Corey Ashe, Greg Garza

Center-midfielders (4)

Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones, Sacha Kljestan, Jose Torres, Mix Diskerud, Stuart Holden, Maurice Edu, Danny Williams, Conor O’Brien, Alfredo Morales

Wings (4)
Landon Donovan, Fabian Johnson (counted as left-back), Graham Zusi, Herculez Gomez, Eddie Johnson, Alejandro Bedoya, Joe Corona, Benny Feilhaber, Brek Shea, Josh Gatt, Bobby Wood

Forwards (3)
Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, Terrence Boyd, Herculez Gomez (counted as a wing), Juan Agudelo (could make the squad if he gets hot), Jack McInerney, C.J. Sapong

MLS Guys who could, perhaps, earn a look at the January Camp
Matt Hedges, Austin Berry, Sean Franklin, Dax McCarty

Future guys?
Joe Gyau, Kelyn Rowe, Nick DeLeon, Jose Villareal, Diego Fagundez (if eligible for the U.S.), Will Packwood, Freddy Adu (with a turn in club form)

Should not be called up — they are not international caliber
Kyle Beckerman, Brad Davis, Kyle Beltran, Brad Evans (perhaps he could be a backup, if desperate, at right-back), Will Bruin, Alan Gordon, Chris Wondolowski, Clarence Goodson, Jonathan Spector, Tim Ream, Chris Pontius

John D. Halloran
